SPITSBERGEN – ARCTIC EXPEDITION

March is the peak of the winter season. The days are long, and the weather conditions are stable, allowing us to make the most of our time on the island. We still have the chance to see the Northern Lights and, if we are lucky, experience Italian weather. The Arctic, especially in winter, is demanding, so it is important to prepare well for the journey. We provide all the necessary equipment for the expedition (suits, helmets, boots, mittens, balaclavas, sledges, headlamps, helmets, crampons/snowshoes and for guides: GPS, firearms, flare guns,).

ARRIVAL IN LONGYEARBYEN

We meet in Longyearbyen (depending on connections, it might be necessary to depart a day earlier and stay overnight in Oslo). Transfer to the hotel. Discussion of the travel plan, city tour of Longyearbyen.

SNOWMOBILES TO PYRAMIDEN

In the morning, we pick up the snowmobiles and equipment, which we will have for the next 3 days. This will give us significant autonomy and won`t limit us time-wise. On the first day, we will head to Pyramiden via the glacier. The road is long and after the first "highway" part, we will cross less touristic paths. Beautiful landscapes and quality time. We will stay 2 nights in a Pyramiden hotel in twin rooms with bathroom.

PYRAMIDEN AND SURROUNDINGS

We will explore Pyramiden, an abandoned settlement located near Nordenskiolbreen, inhabited by about 12 people (guides and hotel staff). Town was abandoned in 1998. Nowadays it is possible to explore buildings such as cantina, school, swimming pool. In the winter there are almost no tourists as only way to reach Pyramiden is by snowmobile. Billefjord is frozen till June. You will feel like in a time machine.

SNOWMOBILES, RETURN TO LONGYEARBYEN

Morning walk around the town, preparation of the snowmobiles, and off we go. We will most likely return via a different route than we came, but as always, this depends on weather and ice conditions and avalanche risks. Evening walk around Longyearbyen.

TREKKING TO THE ICE CAVE

On Spitsbergen, there are countless attractions, and it`s hard to choose the best ones. We plan a trek to the ice cave (included in the price). During the 5-hour trip, we will enter the glacier and the ice cave to admire this unique place. Optionally, you can participate in a cruise to the frozen Billefjord, where, if conditions permit, we will step onto the ice to get even closer to nature. There is a chance to spot walruses, seals, and perhaps a polar bear. If the group prefers this trip, we will visit the ice cave by snowmobiles.
